Dr. Dale A. Meyer serves as President of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO. He was the Speaker of The Lutheran Hour radio program from 1989 to 2001, and since November 2017 has returned to the airwaves as part-time Speaker while concurrently at Concordia Seminary. Dr. Meyer is the author of Word Alive! 52 Selected Sermons by Dale A. Meyer (2017), and Timely Reflections: A Minute a Day with Dale Meyer (2014). He also writes The Meyer Minute, a popular online devotion published each weekday. Dr. Meyer is one of six Seminary faculty members and St. Louis-area pastors who participate in a dramatic presentation of The Gospel of Mark, which they have brought to numerous churches around the country.

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis

From 1989 to 2001, Dr. Meyer served as Speaker of The Lutheran Hour. “The twelve years I was privileged to work at The Lutheran Hour were years of countless blessings,” Dr. Meyer recounts in his new book, Word Alive! 52 Selected Sermons by Dale A. The Gospel of Mark
Dr. Meyer is one of six Seminary faculty members and St. Louis-area pastors who participate in a dramatic presentation of The Gospel of Mark, which they have brought to numerous churches around the country. Each of the six participants brings to life a different section of Mark’s Gospel; Dr. Meyer presents Mark 1:9–4:34. The entire presentation lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an intermission. Biography
Dale A. Meyer was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois. He completed a B.A. in 1969 at Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is a 1973 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, earning a Master of Divinity degree. He earned an M.A. (1974) and a Ph.D. (1986) in classical languages from Washington University in St. Louis. In 1993, Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity.
Meyer began his pastoral career serving as pastor of St. Salvator Lutheran Church in Venedy, Illinois and St. Peter Lutheran Church in New Memphis, Illinois from 1974 to 1981. He served on the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri from 1979 to 1981 as a guest instructor and 1981 to 1984 as an assistant professor teaching classes in New Testament and homiletics and as the director of Resident Field Education. From 1984 to 1988, Dr. Meyer served as senior pastor at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Collinsville, Illinois. From 1989 to 2001, Dr. Meyer was speaker on the radio program The Lutheran Hour and until 2003 he was the host of the television show On Main Street.
Dr. Meyer joined the faculty at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis again in 2001. He served as the Gregg H. Benidt Memorial Chair in Homiletics and Literature at Concordia from 2001-2005. He served as the interim president from 2004 to 2005 and became the tenth president of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 2005. He also serves as a Professor of Practical Theology.
Dr. Meyer has served our synod at-large over the years in several capacities. He served as third vice-president of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) from 1995 to 1998. He was a charter board member of ALOA (Association of Lutheran Older Adults), has served as an honorary director of God’s Word to the Nations Bible Society and as a member of the Standing Committee on Pastoral Ministry for The LCMS. He was pastoral adviser for the Southern Illinois District of the International Lutheran Laymen’s League and has served as first vice-president, second vice-president, secretary, and circuit counselor of the Southern Illinois District of The LCMS.
Meyer has written numerous sermons and columns for Lutheran Hour Ministries, including the booklets “Coping with Cancer” and “Real Men.” He coauthored The Crosses of Lent, in-depth Bible studies of Matthew and Prophecy in the LifeLight series and authored “The Place of the Sermon in the Order of Service” in Concordia’s book Liturgical Preaching for Concordia Publishing House. He has contributed to the Concordia Journal and Issues in Christian Education. His articles include “A Church Caught in the Middle,” “An Urban Seminary,” and “Why Go to Church?” In 2014, Dr. Meyer wrote Timely Reflections: A Minute a Day with Dale Meyer, a compilation of 365 daily devotions from his long-running online series, The Meyer Minute. This book was published by Tri-Pillar Publishing in conjunction with Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. In 2015, he wrote Calling Us Home: A Lenten Sermon Series on 1 Peter, published by Concordia Seminary. Meyer published Word Alive! 52 Selected Sermons by Dale A. Meyer in 2017 through Tri-Pillar Publishing. In November 2017, he returned to the airwaves as part-time Speaker of The Lutheran Hour.
Meyer has been speaking and preaching on the road for over 20 years and continues to do so. His areas of interest and study include: 1 Peter, the Church in a changing culture, and the Sabbath applied to life today. He resides in St. Louis with his wife Diane. They have two grown daughters: Elizabeth (Darren) Pittman and Catharine (Charles) Bailey, and five grandsons: Christian, Connor, Drew, Nicholas, and Jacob.
